In 2022, we aided in the design of a self-supporting wrap-around balcony with an extensive deck space, for a German kit house. The project evolved beyond expectations, delivering a bespoke, impressive outdoor entertainment area.
In early 2022, our client was having a German kit house built in place of an existing agricultural building on their land. They approached us to discuss the possibility of having a wrap-around balcony on three sides of their proposed new house. The challenge? The balcony couldn’t be attached to the building as this would void the house warranty.
Ben and our clients met on site to discuss some options. The design brief was pretty open to suggestions at this early stage but the clients did want to incorporate a workshop beneath one end of the balcony. Maintaining a seamless deck area above was somewhat of a challenge.
To address this, we involved Landmarc, our sister company, to landscape the quarry bank adjoining the balcony and the workshop. This decision later turned out to give the clients far more deck space than they could have ever imagined. After several discussions with a local structural engineer, a plan was made to ensure the balcony would be structurally stable without being attached to any fixed structure.
As it turned out, the final decision was far more elaborate than anyone could have imagined! After a delayed start to the house, and the landscaping complete, production started on the balcony structure. Before we knew it, the clients entrusted us with managing the whole project, from sub-contracting block layers to preparing and constructing a flat roof.
