About the Project

This project was one of our more complex ones! Situated on a clifftop location, our clients were looking to rebuild their recently acquired property. We were asked to supply all the structural steel elements for the whole build. After many site meetings with the clients, the builder, and the architects ‘Roderick James’, we made a start on the ground floor steels.

As the build progressed, it soon became apparent just how complex this structure was. Not only in terms of steelwork but all elements. Bold angles, over sails, cantilevers, and a huge façade to swallow up the striking sea view. Simply working from an engineer’s plan view drawing wasn’t going to cut it, so we had to get more insight into the details.

Project Execution

James Lock from Roderick James Architects (https://www.roderickjamesarchitects.com/) helped us by extrapolating the model and revealing the steel structure within. Once we got to the lower roof level, the next challenge was upon us. This striking build was to have a multi-level mono pitch roof with huge overhangs to provide shade to the outside spaces. This roof structure was mainly of steel construction and supported by two huge exposed glulam timber frames.

Ben spent a whole weekend taking up most of the workshop floor constructing the roof frame in various parts. This paid dividends and Monday morning was all systems go as we dissected the parts, welded them up, numbered them, and stacked them up ready for galvanising and painting. The roof steels were all fitted, and the carpenters quickly carcassed out behind us before the zinc roof was installed. The final part of the project was the balcony structure, privacy screenings, and external staircases.
